Thu Apr 10 06:50:00 UTC 2025: ## EU Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

**Brussels, April 9, 2024** – The European Union has overwhelmingly approved retaliatory tariffs on US goods in response to what it considers unjustified and damaging American tariffs. 26 out of 27 EU member states voted in favor of imposing tariffs ranging from 10% to 25% on a range of US products, including tobacco, motorcycles, poultry, steel, and aluminum.

The European Commission stated that the US tariffs are “unjustified and destructive,” harming both sides and the global economy. While the Commission affirmed its commitment to negotiating a solution with Washington, it emphasized that the retaliatory measures, set to take effect in phases beginning April 15th, are contingent on the US agreeing to fair negotiations. The first wave of tariffs will come into effect on April 15th, with most others following on May 16th. Additional tariffs on goods such as soybeans and nuts will be implemented on December 1st.

This move follows previous threats from US President Trump to sever trade ties with the EU should Brussels retaliate. Trump previously defended the US tariffs as necessary for revitalizing American manufacturing, claiming any EU response would ultimately benefit the US.

The EU’s action marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the two economic powerhouses.
