Wed Apr 09 15:25:01 UTC 2025: ## Virudhunagar Samba Chilli Receives Geographical Indication Tag
**Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, April 9, 2025** – The Virudhunagar Samba Vathal (chilli) has officially received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing its unique qualities and origin. The application for the GI tag was submitted by the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board and the Virudhunagar Chillies Merchants’ Association.
Known for its vibrant red color, moderate heat, and distinct wrinkled texture, the Virudhunagar Samba Chilli is a prized variety in South Indian cuisine. Its aromatic profile, blending smokiness and spiciness, makes it a popular choice in traditional spice blends, pickles, and seasonings. The chilli, measuring 6 to 6.5 cm with a slender shape, is cultivated primarily in Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Thoothukudi districts, with major markets in Virudhunagar, Sattur, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram.
The chilli’s 0.24% capsaicin content contributes to its pungency, making it a sought-after ingredient in spice production, particularly for value-added products. The region’s traditional farming practices are credited with preserving the chilli’s authentic taste and nutritional value. The significance of Sattur Samba Chilli cultivation in the region was highlighted as early as 1972 in the Gazetteer of India, published by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The variety was even exported to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) via Thoothukudi. The GI tag is expected to boost the local economy and protect the unique identity of this important agricultural product.
