**NEW DELHI** – Tahawwur Rana, accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is set to be extradited from the United States to India. A multi-agency team will escort him back to India on a special plane following the US Supreme Court’s rejection of his final appeal.
Rana, a former Pakistani army doctor, faces questioning by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) upon his arrival. Security has been heightened at jails in Delhi and Mumbai in anticipation of his arrival. He is expected to undergo several weeks of interrogation.
While acquitted in the US on charges related to the Mumbai attacks, Rana was convicted for plotting an attack in Denmark and served a 14-year sentence. His alleged role in the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people, is primarily based on testimony from David Headley, a key plotter who became a government witness. Headley’s account detailed Rana’s involvement in the conspiracy.
India had formally requested Rana’s extradition under a bilateral treaty with the US. Rana previously cited health concerns and fears of torture as reasons to oppose extradition. However, these concerns were ultimately dismissed.
The extradition marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The Indian government, particularly the National Security Advisor and the Ministry of Home Affairs, are closely monitoring the process.
