**Mumbai, April 9, 2025** – Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is embroiled in a legal and political battle after failing to appear for questioning by Mumbai police for a third time. Kamra is accused of making a “traitor” remark against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during his stand-up show, “Naya Bharat.”
An FIR was filed against Kamra under sections 353(1)(b) (public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel. Mr. Patel stated that despite repeated summons, Kamra has remained outside of Mumbai, citing death threats and requesting to be questioned via video conference. He has secured anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court, which has been extended until April 17th.
The Bombay High Court has issued notices to both the Mumbai police and Mr. Patel regarding Kamra’s plea to quash the FIR, scheduling a hearing for April 16th. Mr. Patel has vowed to confront Kamra upon his return to Mumbai.
