Tue Apr 08 23:03:00 UTC 2025: ## Indian President Makes Historic Visit to Slovakia

**Bratislava, Slovakia – April 9, 2025** – President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Slovakia today, marking only the second time an Indian Head of State has visited the Central European country. Following a state visit to Portugal, where she met with Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, President Murmu’s visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Slovakia.

During her two-day stay, President Murmu will meet with Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister Robert Fico, and National Council Speaker Richard Rasi. Discussions will focus on strengthening political and economic relations, building upon existing collaborations in areas such as Sanskrit studies, and highlighting the significant contributions of Indian companies like Tata Motors Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), whose Nitra plant represents a €1.4 billion investment and produces 150,000 vehicles annually.

The visit comes 29 years after the last Indian presidential visit to Slovakia, signifying a renewed focus on the relationship. India’s External Affairs Ministry highlighted the existing strong political momentum and significant business engagement between the two nations, including collaborations in defense and IT. The visit is also seen as crucial in the context of the India-EU partnership, as Slovakia joined the EU when the strategic partnership between India and the EU was launched. The strong historical connections, including the translation of Mahatma Gandhi’s works into Slovak and Slovakia’s support during the 2022 evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine, further underscore the importance of the visit.
