Wed Apr 09 17:03:22 UTC 2025: ## West Bengal CM Assures Minorities Amidst Violent Protests Over Waqf Act

**Kolkata, April 9, 2025** – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured minority communities of protection amidst violent protests sparked by the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Following clashes in Murshidabad district where protestors attacked police vehicles and 22 arrests were made, Banerjee appealed for calm, stating that hasty action could harm the state government.

While acknowledging the community’s concerns, Banerjee cautioned against “politically motivated” provocations and urged restraint, referencing the volatile situation at the Bangladesh border. She emphasized her commitment to protecting minorities, claiming that they comprise approximately 33% of the state’s population – a figure disputed by the 2011 census which places the minority population at 27.01%.

Banerjee’s assurances have drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, who accuse her of opposing a nationally passed law. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar condemned her stance as a betrayal of the Constitution. The Trinamool Congress countered, accusing the BJP of twisting Banerjee’s words and highlighting her commitment to inclusive governance. The situation remains tense, with prohibitory orders in place in affected areas.
