Wed Apr 09 15:54:02 UTC 2025: ## Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Session Ends in Chaos Over Waqf Amendment Act
**Jammu, April 9, 2025** – The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s 21-day session concluded abruptly on Wednesday amidst chaotic scenes sparked by the controversial Waqf Amendment Act. The ruling National Conference (NC) and regional parties demanded a discussion on the Act, while the BJP vehemently opposed it, leading to a heated exchange and protests.
The debate, which marked the third consecutive day of disruptions, saw NC MLAs demanding a discussion on the Act. In response, BJP MLAs stormed the well of the house, staging a sit-in. Speaker Rahim Rather ultimately adjourned the session sine die as the protests escalated.
Opposition parties criticized the NC’s handling of the issue. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra lamented the failure to address the concerns of the Muslim community regarding the Act, highlighting the perceived lack of unity among Muslim MLAs. Peoples Conference president Sajad Lone accused the NC of political theatrics and criticized their perceived inaction on a matter of significant importance to the Muslim-majority region.
The BJP, meanwhile, accused the NC of attempting to protect relatives and workers who allegedly encroached on Waqf land, labeling it “land jihad.” Despite the disruptions, the Assembly did manage to pass three government bills and list 33 private member’s bills during the session. The controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Act, however, dominated the final day and overshadowed other legislative business.
