**JAKARTA** – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced Wednesday a plan to provide temporary shelter to Palestinians displaced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Following weeks of intensified military operations in Gaza, nearly 400,000 Palestinians have been displaced, according to the United Nations.
Mr. Subianto stated Indonesia’s readiness to accept wounded Palestinians and traumatized children, prioritizing their evacuation. He anticipates an initial group of approximately 1,000 individuals and has instructed his Foreign Minister to coordinate with Palestinian officials and regional parties on the logistics of evacuation. The Indonesian government emphasizes that the shelter will be temporary, lasting only until the individuals have recovered and it is safe for their return to Gaza.
This humanitarian initiative comes as Mr. Subianto embarks on a Middle East tour including visits to the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan. During his visit to Turkey, he is expected to address the Turkish parliament, a rare honor. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The close ties between Indonesia and Turkey, solidified by Turkish President Erdogan’s February visit, are expected to further facilitate this humanitarian effort.
