**New Delhi, April 9, 2025** – The Indian government has finalized a $7 billion (₹63,000 crore) deal to acquire 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets from France. The agreement, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), includes 22 single-seater carrier-borne jets and four twin-seater trainers. The jets will significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities, particularly on the newly commissioned INS Vikrant, the nation’s first indigenous aircraft carrier.
The government-to-government deal encompasses a comprehensive package beyond the aircraft themselves. This includes provisions for fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and the manufacture of components in India to fulfill offset obligations. Deliveries are anticipated to commence approximately five years after the contract is signed.
The acquisition will also benefit the Indian Air Force (IAF). The deal is expected to facilitate upgrades to the IAF’s existing Rafale fleet, including enhancements to its buddy-buddy aerial refueling system and ground-based equipment. The Navy will also need to install specialized carrier-based equipment to support the Rafale-M’s operations. The IAF currently operates 36 Rafale jets.
The Rafale-M jets, a 4.5-generation fighter, will supplement the Navy’s existing MiG-29K fleet, providing a substantial increase in air power projection capabilities.
