Wed Apr 09 01:09:57 UTC 2025: ## IMF Approves $20 Billion Bailout for Argentina

**Buenos Aires, April 9, 2025** – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced a preliminary agreement on a $20 billion bailout package for Argentina. This follows months of negotiations and comes as a significant reprieve for President Javier Milei, who has implemented a free-market austerity program to stabilize the country’s economy.

The agreement, which still requires final approval from the IMF’s executive board, acknowledges President Milei’s success in reducing Argentina’s fiscal deficit. This has been achieved through measures such as eliminating government agencies, firing public employees, and scrapping subsidies and price controls – resulting in Argentina’s first fiscal surplus in nearly two decades.

However, the lack of international funding has hampered efforts to rebuild Argentina’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, crucial for debt repayment and easing strict currency controls that hinder foreign investment. The IMF loan is expected to address this critical need. While the IMF praised Milei’s progress, Argentina, the IMF’s largest debtor with 22 loans since 1958, has been waiting for the bailout to continue its economic reforms. There has been no immediate official response from the Argentine government.
