Wed Apr 09 05:11:49 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Artist Rescues Forgotten Legacy of Chandamama Illustrator

**Bengaluru, April 9, 2025** – The works of M.T.V. Acharya, a largely forgotten illustrator who created iconic images for the popular children’s magazine *Chandamama*, are finally getting their due thanks to the dedication of contemporary artist Shivanand Basavanthappa. Acharya, who passed away before Basavanthappa even began his art studies, illustrated a significant portion of *Chandamama*’s content during its decades-long run (1947-2013), captivating generations of Indian children with his depictions of mythology and fantasy.

Basavanthappa’s journey to rediscovering Acharya’s art began serendipitously. Through a series of chance encounters and determined research, he amassed over 200 of Acharya’s paintings, rescuing them from obscurity and even recovering some pieces that had been pilfered. His efforts culminated in “Life and Art of M.T.V. Acharya,” an exhibition currently running at the Indian Institute of World Culture in Bengaluru until April 13.

The exhibition showcases Acharya’s vibrant watercolors, featuring scenes from Indian mythology, pastoral landscapes, and portraits, many reportedly inspired by his wife, Vijayalakshmi. Basavanthappa’s quest also extended to collecting vintage copies of *Chandamama*, further enriching his understanding of Acharya’s contribution. He even unearthed approximately 60 nearly 70-year-old copies of the magazine featuring Acharya’s illustrations.

Basavanthappa’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. News of his project has prompted donations from friends, family, and students, adding to the growing collection of Acharya’s work. The artist hopes to establish a museum dedicated to Acharya’s legacy, and reportedly, Kannada film director P. Sheshadri is considering making a film about the artist’s life. The exhibition, which is free to the public, serves as a testament to Basavanthappa’s remarkable effort in preserving a significant piece of India’s artistic heritage.
