Wed Apr 09 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## New Tariffs Hit Asian Grocery Stores Hard, Raising Prices for Consumers

**Springfield, VA and Los Angeles, CA** – New tariffs imposed on goods from several Asian countries are set to significantly impact Asian grocery stores across the United States, leading to price increases for consumers. The Trump administration’s sweeping tariff plan, with rates ranging from 17% for the Philippines to 54% for China, is hitting Asian markets particularly hard, as they rely heavily on imported goods.

Owners of small, family-run Asian grocery stores, such as Manila Oriental Market in Springfield, VA, and Paak Bangla Bazaar in Falls Church, VA, report customers are already expressing concern over rising prices. Arlene Calimlim, owner of Manila Oriental Market, stated that the impending price increases are impacting both her business and her customers, many of whom are already struggling with inflation. The store, which carries many products from the Philippines, will face a 17% tariff increase on imports. Similar concerns are echoed by Muhammad Hossain, owner of Paak Bangla Bazaar, where almost all products are imported from South Asian countries facing significant tariff increases.

Larger chains are also feeling the pressure. Alvin Lee, president of Lotte Plaza Market, a chain with stores across multiple states, reports that approximately 80% of their products are imported and that suppliers are already announcing price increases. He noted that the chain is operating on already tight margins.

The impact extends beyond smaller stores. Enrique Moreno, general manager of Yama Sushi Marketplace in Los Angeles, expressed worry about the increased cost of imported seafood, a staple of their business. With the U.S. importing up to 85% of its seafood, the tariffs are expected to have a substantial impact on prices.

Economists predict price increases for various Asian goods, including rice, fish, and spices. This is causing particular hardship for immigrant communities who rely on these stores for affordable, culturally relevant food options. While some consumers are stockpiling goods, others are determined to continue supporting their local Asian grocery stores despite the looming price increases. The long-term economic consequences for both consumers and businesses remain uncertain.
