Wed Apr 09 04:32:33 UTC 2025: ## West Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam: BJP MP Proposes Solution Amidst Protests
**Kolkata, April 9, 2025** – The aftermath of the Supreme Court’s annulment of 25,752 teaching and non-teaching appointments in West Bengal due to a recruitment scam continues to roil the state. BJP MP and former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has proposed a solution to distinguish between “tainted” and “untainted” candidates, suggesting the release of Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheets to identify those involved in irregularities.
The Supreme Court’s April 3rd ruling upheld the Calcutta High Court’s decision, leading to widespread protests across the state. Affected teachers and non-teaching staff, along with members of opposition parties including the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress, have staged demonstrations demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. Roadblocks were reported in Kolkata and Howrah.
Mr. Gangopadhyay, who spearheaded the initial investigation into the 2016 recruitment process irregularities while a judge, believes the OMR sheets, if still extant, could reveal the guilty parties. He also suggested a committee to examine the matter, a proposal dismissed by the state’s Education Minister Bratya Basu.
The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, criticized Mr. Gangopadhyay for not resolving the issue during his time as a judge. The state government is planning to file a review petition with the Supreme Court. Chief Minister Banerjee met with affected teachers, assuring them of support. The situation remains tense, with the threat of further large-scale protests if a resolution isn’t found quickly.
