Wed Apr 09 03:05:25 UTC 2025: ## Former Facebook Exec to Testify Before Senate on Meta’s China Ties
**San Francisco, April 9, 2025** – Sarah Wynn-Williams, former global policy director at Meta (formerly Facebook), will testify before the US Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday. Her testimony will focus on allegations detailed in her recently published book, “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,” which claims Meta explored appeasing Chinese censors to gain access to the Chinese market.
Wynn-Williams’s appearance follows a court order barring her from promoting the book or making negative statements about Meta, stemming from a non-disparagement contract. Despite this, the book is a bestseller, currently ranking second on the New York Times nonfiction list. Another book highly critical of Meta’s impact on children also features prominently on the list.
Meta denies Wynn-Williams’s allegations, stating that she was fired for poor performance and toxic behavior, and that internal investigations found her claims to be unfounded. The company’s communications director, Andy Stone, confirmed that while Meta explored strategies for the Chinese market, it ultimately decided against them. The hearing will also scrutinize whether Wynn-Williams’ testimony contradicts previous statements made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to Congress. Of particular interest is Wynn-Williams’ account of sexual harassment by a longtime Meta executive, Joel Kaplan.
The hearing, led by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), aims to determine the extent of Meta’s engagement with the Chinese government and whether any actions violated US law or ethical standards. The hearing comes amidst heightened scrutiny of large technology companies’ global operations and their impact on society.
