MADURAI, April 9, 2025 – Members of the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) staged a protest in Madurai today, condemning Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan for using derogatory language referencing disabilities to criticize opposition parties.
The protesters argued that Minister Duraimurugan’s words, used during a public meeting, were particularly offensive given the respectful term “matruthiranaligal” (differently abled people) coined by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. A. Balamurugan, the district secretary of TARATDAC, stated that the Minister’s actions showed a lack of concern for the disabled community. The protestors demanded an unconditional apology from Minister Duraimurugan.
