**Niigata, Japan** – JR East will conduct a trial run of facial recognition technology at Shinkansen bullet train gates in Niigata and Nagaoka stations. The trial, utilizing NEC’s facial recognition system, will target passengers with Shinkansen commuter passes between the two stations.

This initiative is part of JR East’s “Beyond the Border” mid-to-long-term business growth strategy and its push for “Suica Renaissance,” aiming to improve accessibility for passengers with large luggage or strollers through walk-through gates. NEC’s system is designed to be easily installed atop existing gates, minimizing disruption and maximizing efficiency.

The trial focuses on enhancing the convenience and speed of passing through Shinkansen gates, aligning with JR East’s broader goals of modernizing its infrastructure and improving the passenger experience.
