NIIGATA, Japan—JR East announced on August 8th that it will begin field testing a facial recognition system for Shinkansen (bullet train) ticket gates this autumn. The trial, aiming to create a “walk-through” gate eliminating the need to stop at ticket barriers, will utilize the latest facial recognition technology. The test locations will be Niigata and Nagaoka stations in Niigata prefecture, on the Joetsu Shinkansen line.
