**Jackson, MS** – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is urging Mississippi residents to claim millions of dollars in unclaimed stimulus checks and tax refunds before looming deadlines. Over $8 million in unclaimed funds are owed to Mississippi taxpayers, according to the IRS.
A significant portion of this sum represents unclaimed Recovery Rebate Credits, part of the COVID-19 economic relief package. The IRS recently disbursed $2.4 billion nationwide to approximately one million taxpayers who hadn’t claimed these credits, which can be up to $1,400 per person. However, the deadline to claim this credit is fast approaching, with only days remaining in April. Those who have not yet filed their 2021 taxes will not receive the money. The IRS will automatically send the payment via mail or direct deposit if the 2023 tax return has been filed.
Furthermore, the IRS estimates that approximately 9,600 Mississippians are owed an average of $701 in unclaimed 2021 tax refunds, totaling about $1 billion nationwide. The deadline to claim these refunds is also fast approaching. Failing to file before the April 15, 2025 deadline will forfeit the funds.
“Many people are simply unaware they’re owed money,” stated Bonnie Bolden, Deep South Connect reporter for Mississippi. “The IRS is encouraging anyone who hasn’t filed their 2021 taxes to do so immediately.” Claiming the money is simple; taxpayers simply need to file their 2021 tax return. No additional action is required to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
The IRS urges Mississippi residents to visit IRS.gov or contact a tax professional for assistance in filing their 2021 taxes and claiming their rightful funds.
