HYDERABAD, INDIA – The Telangana High Court today upheld the death sentences of five men convicted in the 2013 Dilsukhnagar twin bombings. The court dismissed appeals filed by the convicts challenging the death penalty handed down by a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in 2016.

The February 21, 2013, blasts at a crowded bus stop and near a market in Dilsukhnagar killed 18 people and injured 131 others. While the main accused, Mohammad Riyaz alias Riyaz Bhatkal, remains at large, five others – Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi, Zia ur Rehman alias Vaqas alias Nabil Ahmed, Mohammad Tahseen Akhtar alias Hasan alias Monu, Yasin Bhatkal alias Sharukh, and Ajaz Sheikh alias Samar Arman Tunde alias Sagar alias Ijaz Syed Sheikh – were sentenced to death.

The High Court’s decision, reached after a 45-day hearing, confirms the NIA court’s findings and brings closure to a case that shocked the nation. The convicts now have the option to appeal to the Supreme Court.
