**Cape Canaveral, FL (March 31, 2025)** – SpaceX successfully launched the privately funded Fram2 mission today, marking the first human spaceflight to directly traverse Earth’s polar regions. The four-astronaut crew, aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 9:46 PM EST.
The mission, named after the famed Norwegian polar exploration vessel, will conduct a series of experiments, including the first-ever X-ray taken in space and mushroom cultivation in microgravity. These experiments aim to support future long-duration space travel, particularly missions to Mars.
The crew consists of mission commander Chun Wang, a Maltese adventurer and crypto entrepreneur; vehicle commander Jannicke Mikkelsen, a Norwegian film director; mission pilot Rabea Rogge, a German robotics researcher; and mission specialist Eric Philps, an Australian polar explorer. The team underwent eight months of rigorous training, including a simulated Alaskan wilderness expedition.
This groundbreaking mission represents a significant leap in private space exploration. While astronauts have orbited Earth, this marks the first time a human mission will directly fly over the poles, a feat previously unattempted except for some Apollo missions which did not fly directly over the poles. Upon return, the crew will participate in a study assessing their ability to perform basic tasks post-flight without immediate medical support. The mission is expected to last approximately four days.
