**Naypyitaw, Myanmar – April 8, 2025** – The death toll from the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28th has surpassed 3,600, with over 5,000 injured and 160 still missing, according to the military government. International rescue efforts have concluded, with teams from Singapore, Malaysia, and India returning home after assisting in the recovery of 653 survivors. However, the focus has shifted to relief and recovery, with over 17.2 million people in affected areas urgently requiring food, water, medical care, and shelter.
The earthquake, officially named the “Big Mandalay Earthquake,” caused widespread damage across six regions and states, disrupting essential services and leaving many areas without power or communication. Recovery efforts are hampered by damaged infrastructure and the ongoing conflict within the country.
Despite temporary ceasefires declared by both the military government and various armed opposition groups to facilitate relief efforts, accusations of ceasefire violations persist. The shadow National Unity Government (NUG) alleges 63 airstrikes and artillery attacks by the military since the earthquake, resulting in civilian casualties. The military, in turn, accuses several armed groups of violating the ceasefires. This ongoing conflict complicates relief efforts and adds to the suffering of those affected by the earthquake. The situation is further exacerbated by the start of the rainy season in some areas, threatening those seeking shelter in the open. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that entire communities have been devastated, pushing essential services to the brink of collapse.
