**Thiruvananthapuram, April 8, 2025** – Kerala University has launched a comprehensive campaign to combat the rising problem of drug abuse in educational institutions across the state. Following a recent meeting of senior officials, University Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Mohanan Kunnummal announced a “Zero Tolerance” policy and a multi-pronged action strategy.
The strategy includes extensive awareness programs for students and parents, collaborations with law enforcement and medical professionals, and regular educational campaigns highlighting the dangers of drug use. Visible anti-drug posters will be displayed on campuses, and students will sign affidavits pledging to remain drug-free.
Increased parental involvement is encouraged through regular hostel visits. Student volunteers from organizations like the National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corps, along with law enforcement, will conduct regular campus inspections. Campuses maintaining a drug-free environment will receive certificates of recognition.
Further initiatives include the establishment of monitoring teams utilizing AI-enabled drones for enhanced surveillance. Drug abuse awareness will be integrated into the curriculum, and online parent engagement meetings will be held. The university will also re-evaluate college entry age criteria and explore the use of drug testing strips.
Colleges will be required to regularly report their anti-drug activities to the University Registrar, and successful programs will be showcased on the university website. Over 220 stakeholders, including department heads, college principals, and hostel wardens, participated in the initial meeting. The initiative aims to make Kerala’s universities role models for safety, health, and social responsibility, reflecting suggestions from both the Chancellor and Chief Minister.
