**Malappuram, Kerala:** A husband has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder following the death of his wife during childbirth at their rented accommodation in Malappuram. Sirajudheen, 35-year-old Asma’s husband, was taken into custody Monday night. Police allege he also attempted to obstruct justice by transporting his wife’s body to his home in Perumbavoor after her death on April 5th.
Asma, 35, died from excessive bleeding after giving birth at home. This was her fifth pregnancy; her first two children were born in hospitals, while the subsequent three, including the fatal birth, occurred at home. Police suspect Sirajudheen encouraged the home birth, despite previous hospital deliveries. Malappuram SP Vishwanadh R stated that the police are investigating the roles of others present during the childbirth and whether the accused and others promoted the idea of unsafe home births.
Sirajudheen’s income reportedly comes from his YouTube channel and religious discourses, and the couple may have relocated to Malappuram for professional reasons. The incident has sparked concern, with Kerala Health Minister Veena George describing it as a “deliberate act of murder,” highlighting a worrying societal trend despite Kerala’s generally low maternal mortality rates. The investigation is ongoing.
