**Srinagar, April 8, 2025** – The vibrant spring flowers of Kashmir, vital to the region’s biodiversity and cultural heritage, are facing increasing threats from climate change and unsustainable development, according to a University of Kashmir study.
The valley’s unique agroclimatic conditions nurture a variety of endemic plants, including the Colchicum luteum, Sternbergia vernalis, Salix, Viburnum grandiflorum, and daffodils. These flowers, crucial for pollinating fruit trees and holding cultural and medicinal significance for local communities, are experiencing disrupted blooming patterns due to milder winters and early warming.
Professor Anzar Khuroo’s research reveals a shift in the flowering phenology of Sternbergia vernalis, a key indicator of the impact of climate change. While national parks offer some protection, unregulated tourism and deforestation pose significant risks. The study highlights the need for dedicated conservation programs to safeguard these ecologically and culturally important species. Professor Khuroo emphasizes the importance of balancing development with conservation efforts to preserve Kashmir’s unique floral heritage for future generations.
