**Bengaluru, April 8, 2025** – Karnataka is intensifying its crackdown on underage driving following a sharp increase in road accidents involving minors. Data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reveals that between 2023 and 2024, 751 accidents were caused by drivers under 18, placing Karnataka sixth nationally, behind Tamil Nadu (2,063 accidents).
This alarming statistic has prompted a multi-pronged approach by authorities. In Bengaluru, a recent month-long police operation targeting “wheeling” (reckless driving) resulted in 398 cases, 82 involving minors. Sixty-eight guardians faced action for negligence, and 32 cases were filed under the Juvenile Justice Act. Further deterrents included the suspension of 40 driving licenses and the forwarding of 197 vehicle registration certificates for cancellation.
Authorities emphasize the legal ramifications under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which holds parents or guardians and vehicle owners criminally liable for minors driving, with penalties including imprisonment and fines.
Road safety experts, like Prof. M.N. Srihari, highlight the need for broader societal change. He points to easy access to vehicles for children without adequate training or awareness of the risks. He advocates for stronger deterrents and community-based initiatives to educate families about the dangers of underage driving. The ongoing efforts aim to not only penalize offenders but also cultivate a greater sense of responsibility among parents and vehicle owners.
