Tue Apr 08 12:10:00 UTC 2025: **Cricket South Africa Unveils 2025/26 Contracts, Hybrid Deals Highlight Shifting Landscape**

JOHANNESBURG – Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced its men’s contracted players for the 2025/26 season, revealing a roster reshaped by the growing influence of lucrative franchise leagues. Several high-profile changes mark the transition, with the introduction of hybrid contracts for key players David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen, allowing them to participate in selected bilateral tours and ICC events.

Several players have joined the fold: David Bedingham, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne, and Lizaad Williams. Meanwhile, Bjorn Fortuin, Heinrich Klaasen, Andile Phehlukwayo, and Tabraiz Shamsi are no longer centrally contracted. Shamsi opted out of his contract in October.

The most significant development surrounds wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, whose future remains uncertain. After becoming the most expensive foreign player in IPL history (USD 2.7 million), his potential exclusion from the national team raises questions about the balance between international and franchise commitments. Klaasen, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, has a stellar white-ball record for South Africa, but CSA’s inability to secure a contract, even a hybrid one, casts doubt on his international future.

CSA’s director of national teams and high performance, Enoch Nkwe, emphasized that the contracts were formulated with the upcoming World Test Championship cycle and the 2027 World Cup on home soil in mind. The hybrid contracts, he explained, address the dynamic nature of modern cricket. However, the growing number of players opting for such arrangements highlights the ongoing challenge for national boards in competing with lucrative franchise leagues. The full list of contracted players and those on hybrid deals is included below.

The situation underscores the evolving landscape of international cricket, forcing national teams to navigate the financial realities of a globalized game.
