Tue Apr 08 15:11:29 UTC 2025: ## Germany Suspends UN Refugee Program Amidst Tougher Immigration Stance
**Berlin** – Germany has suspended its participation in a United Nations refugee resettlement program, signaling a tougher stance on immigration under the incoming centre-right CDU-led government. The decision, confirmed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the UNHCR, comes as coalition negotiations between the CDU and SPD conclude, with both parties reportedly agreeing on stricter asylum policies.
The suspension affects the only currently active UN program for refugee admissions to Germany. While the ministry stated that applications already in progress will be processed, the move reflects a growing public sentiment for reduced migrant intake. This shift follows February’s elections, where the far-right AfD party doubled its vote share, partly fueled by concerns over refugee-related crime.
The CDU has advocated for stricter border controls, including turning away asylum seekers who have passed through safe countries. The new coalition agreement reportedly includes an end to all voluntary federal refugee admission programs. While Germany remains a major host country for refugees, with 2.5 million including over one million Ukrainians, the government cites a need to control irregular migration. Recent EU data even shows France and Spain now receiving more asylum applications than Germany. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser attributed the change to measures aimed at curbing irregular migration into Europe. The suspended UN program had seen 4,711 arrivals since 2024, a fraction of the 13,000 Germany pledged to accept through 2025.
