**Chennai, April 8, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) will investigate the suspicious death of G. Senthil Kumar, a suspected poacher found dead in Eriyur reserve forest on April 4th. This follows concerns raised in the Tamil Nadu Assembly regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
Senthil Kumar, a resident of Kongarapatti village, was in custody following the discovery of a mutilated and charred sub-adult elephant carcass on March 1st. He escaped custody on March 18th while being taken to identify a hideout. His body was found handcuffed, with reports suggesting a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
PMK floor leader G.K. Mani and CPI floor leader T. Ramachandran questioned the circumstances of his death, noting the inconsistencies and alleging that forest officials prevented local residents from accessing the forest area after his escape. They demanded a CBI investigation.
Forest Minister K. Ponmudy confirmed the CB-CID probe, stating that police and forest department officials had initially investigated the scene before transferring the case. The CB-CID will conduct a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable. The Minister’s statement also included helpline information for those experiencing suicidal thoughts.
