**HALLAND, SWEDEN** – A Danish couple who ran the acclaimed eco-friendly retreat Stedsans in southern Sweden have vanished, leaving behind a scene of environmental devastation and mounting debts. Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbaek allegedly fled to Guatemala in the midst of a tax investigation, abandoning 158 barrels of human waste seeping into a nearby forest.
Stedsans, a luxury resort comprised of 16 wooden houses, had received glowing reviews from critics and influencers, lauded for its enchanting natural setting. However, the resort declared bankruptcy in March, and the couple reportedly registered as foreign residents before Christmas.
According to Danish media reports cited by The Guardian, Hansen and Helbaek owe millions of kroner to Danish tax authorities from their previous venture in Copenhagen and a further 6 million SEK (approximately €470,000) to Swedish authorities. Staff members allege that the couple’s abrupt departure also resulted in the death of several animals left unattended and the abandonment of others.
The couple, who previously described themselves as “soul-driven entrepreneurs,” cited bureaucratic hurdles in Sweden as a reason for their failure. Their website statement claims they aimed to “create a more beautiful planet,” despite the environmental and financial catastrophe they left behind.
Local authorities are investigating the incident as an environmental crime. Daniel Helsing, head of the county’s construction and environment department, expressed shock at the discovery of over 150 barrels of raw sewage, stating simply, “Voila. Over 150 barrels of human shit.” The couple has since opened a second hotel in Guatemala. Investigations into their financial and environmental infractions are ongoing.
