**Geneva, Switzerland** – World Health Day, observed annually on April 7th, will this year launch a year-long campaign focused on maternal and newborn health under the theme “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures.” The initiative, spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to drastically reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
According to the WHO, nearly 300,000 women die each year due to pregnancy or childbirth, while over 2 million babies die within their first month of life, and approximately 2 million more are stillborn. This translates to a preventable death roughly every seven seconds. Current trends indicate that a significant number of countries are failing to meet targets for improving maternal and newborn survival by 2030.
The campaign will emphasize several key strategies: promoting healthy pregnancies and births, improving postnatal care, and highlighting the importance of maternal mental health. The WHO recommends prioritizing regular prenatal check-ups, maintaining a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, and ensuring access to qualified healthcare professionals throughout the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postnatal periods.
“This is a critical moment to address the unacceptable loss of mothers and newborns,” said a WHO spokesperson. “By focusing on prevention and access to quality care, we can create healthier beginnings and brighter futures for families and communities worldwide.” The WHO urges governments and healthcare organizations to strengthen their commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to maternal and child health.
The WHO stresses that this information is for general awareness and should not replace consultation with a qualified medical professional.
