Chidambaram criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that the central government has allocated three times more funds to Tamil Nadu’s development since 2014 than in the preceding decade. Chidambaram, a former Union Finance Minister, argued that this claim is statistically misleading, stating that any economic metric will naturally appear larger when compared to previous years due to overall economic growth.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chidambaram highlighted the Prime Minister’s specific claim of seven times increased railway funding for Tamil Nadu. He challenged the comparison, pointing out that the GDP, central budget, and total government expenditure all increase annually. He questioned whether the increased allocation represents a higher proportion of the GDP or total expenditure, suggesting that raw numbers are insufficient to demonstrate genuine increased support.

Chidambaram’s remarks follow Prime Minister Modi’s Sunday visit to Tamil Nadu, where he touted the increased central funding as a significant contributor to the state’s economic progress. Modi’s statement came amid criticism from the ruling DMK party regarding central fund allocation.
