Sun Apr 06 23:36:00 UTC 2025: ## Indian Parliamentary Panel Urges Effort to Attract Ivy League Campuses

**New Delhi, April 7, 2025** – A parliamentary committee in India has called for increased efforts to attract campuses from leading global universities, including Ivy League institutions, despite recent progress in establishing foreign university branches within the country.

The report, tabled in the Rajya Sabha this week and headed by Congress MP Digvijay Singh, notes that while several universities from the UK and Australia have established or are in the process of establishing campuses in India, no Ivy League or other prominent U.S. universities have yet followed suit. The committee highlights India’s large student population and government initiatives aimed at fostering international collaborations as factors driving this trend.

The panel recommends that the Department of Higher Education actively pursue agreements with top-tier global universities to improve access to world-class resources for Indian students. While initiatives like the “Study in India” program (launched in 2018) and collaborations on joint research projects are underway, the absence of prestigious U.S. institutions remains a concern.

The report acknowledges the recent UGC regulations allowing foreign universities to operate campuses in India and cites examples of Australian and UK universities already establishing a presence. However, it emphasizes the need to secure partnerships with leading U.S. institutions to further enhance the quality of higher education within India. The committee’s findings underscore the ongoing efforts to internationalize Indian higher education while highlighting the importance of attracting the most prestigious institutions globally.
