Sun Apr 06 03:30:00 UTC 2025: **Giants’ Schmitt Takes on Unexpected First Base Role**

SAN FRANCISCO — Casey Schmitt, the Giants’ utility infielder, is facing an unexpected challenge: learning first base on the fly. The 26-year-old, primarily a third baseman, is filling a void created by Jerar Encarnacion’s eight-week injury. With Wilmer Flores primarily DH’ing, Schmitt is providing a right-handed hitting option to platoon with LaMonte Wade Jr. at first.

Schmitt, who hadn’t played first base since 2019, made his first major league appearances at the position this week during a series against Houston. While admitting to a learning curve, Schmitt is embracing the opportunity, stating, “I don’t care where I’m at, as long as I get to play.”

Manager Bob Melvin acknowledged the challenges, noting that the position’s nuances, including different spins and angles off the bat, are new to Schmitt. However, Melvin expressed confidence in Schmitt’s ability to adapt, emphasizing a patient approach to his development at the position. With established players at shortstop and third base, first base offers Schmitt the most viable path to consistent playing time. He’s already begun practicing at the position and procured his own first baseman’s glove. The Giants expect it will take time for Schmitt to fully master the position.
