**Lubbock, TX –** A second child in Texas has died from measles, marking the second such fatality in the ongoing nationwide outbreak. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This death, along with a death in New Mexico, constitutes the first measles-related deaths reported in the U.S. in a decade. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to attend the child’s funeral on Sunday.
The outbreak, which began in Texas in late January, has now spread to at least 21 states and Washington, D.C., with a total of 628 confirmed cases nationwide. Texas alone accounts for 481 cases, including six infants and toddlers at a Lubbock daycare. Fifty-six people in the Lubbock area have been hospitalized due to measles complications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that measles can be fatal, with one to three out of every 1,000 infected children dying from respiratory or neurological complications. Pneumonia, the most common cause of measles-related death in young children, affects about one in twenty infected.
Health officials are urging vaccination as the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles.
