Sun Apr 06 12:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Bon Jovi’s Soup Kitchen Sparks Controversy in Toms River

**TOMS RIVER, NJ** – Rock star Jon Bon Jovi’s efforts to combat homelessness through his JBJ Soul Kitchen have ignited a clash with Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick. Rodrick is vehemently opposing a pop-up kitchen operating within the Ocean County Library, accusing county officials of transforming the township into a hub for homeless services.

The mayor claims the initiative, which offers meals in exchange for volunteer work or a “pay-it-forward” system, endangers public safety and strains local resources. He expressed concerns that it would attract homeless individuals from across the region, including New York City and Philadelphia, turning Toms River into a magnet for the homeless population. Rodrick cited police and EMS call data as evidence of increased activity in the area.

Rodrick further criticized Bon Jovi for not using his existing JBJ Soul Kitchen located elsewhere in Toms River, suggesting the singer should address the issue within his existing facilities rather than bringing individuals to the downtown area. He even suggested Bon Jovi house the homeless at his own Middletown mansion. He has threatened legal action to prevent the expansion of homeless services in the township.

The Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation countered that its mission is to provide real solutions to homelessness and hunger and not to simply relocate individuals. The foundation highlighted its significant investment in affordable housing. Bon Jovi plans to operate the pop-up kitchen until May. The conflict highlights a stark difference in opinion regarding the responsibility for addressing homelessness within the community.
