Sun Apr 06 12:15:58 UTC 2025: ## Telangana Govt Mulls Controversial 2,000-Acre Eco-Park, Potentially Displacing University of Hyderabad

**Hyderabad, April 6, 2025** – The Telangana government is considering a controversial proposal to create a massive 2,000-acre eco-park, potentially displacing the University of Hyderabad (UoH) in the process. The proposal, which emerged following Supreme Court scrutiny of a separate land development project adjacent to the university, involves incorporating the UoH’s 1,600-acre campus into the park.

The plan, reportedly brought to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s attention, suggests relocating the UoH to a new 30,000-acre site near the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar highways. The government would reportedly fund new buildings and hostels at the new location.

However, the proposal faces significant hurdles. Sources within the ruling party express skepticism, with one senior leader stating there’s no official communication about the plan. Experts also raise concerns about the feasibility of such a large-scale relocation. The UoH, a central university, is administered by the central government, requiring its consent for any land transfer. Furthermore, the President of India, as the university’s Visitor, would need to approve the relocation.

The potential for significant backlash from students, civil society, and opposition parties is also a major concern. The ongoing controversy surrounding a separate 400-acre land development near the university highlights the potential for intense public opposition to such a drastic plan. Relocating the prestigious UoH, with its extensive research facilities and thousands of students, would likely take a decade or more.

The feasibility and legality of this proposal remain highly questionable, with officials reportedly unwilling to publicly discuss the matter. The government faces a complex situation balancing environmental concerns with the practical and political realities of displacing a nationally renowned university.
