**COIMBATORE, April 6, 2025** – The Coimbatore police and Road Transport Authority (RTA) will intensify checks and impose fines on private vehicles illegally using red and blue emergency LED strobe lights. This follows a recent rise in misuse, particularly among local political party functionaries.
The decision was announced after a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, where concerns were raised about the widespread presence of these lights on private cars and even two-wheelers. Police reported that while some offenders have been advised to remove the lights, further action, including special drives to identify and penalize violators, is planned.
The committee also noted the illegal use of high-decibel horns, typically reserved for VVIP convoys, on some private vehicles. Committee member K. Kathirmathiyon urged for stringent action, highlighting the easy availability of these lights in shops and online. The authorities emphasized their commitment to curbing this dangerous practice, citing safety concerns arising from the misuse of emergency lights.
