Sun Apr 06 15:20:00 UTC 2025: ## NATO Chief Urges Russia to Accelerate Peace Talks in Ukraine

**Brussels, Belgium** – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged Russia to significantly accelerate its efforts to end the war in Ukraine, echoing concerns voiced by U.S. officials. In an interview with Face the Nation, Rutte stated that Russia’s progress towards peace is insufficient and that Moscow needs to take more decisive action.

Rutte, who spoke with U.S. officials including Senator Marco Rubio, emphasized the strong alignment between the U.S. and its NATO allies in their efforts to counter Russian aggression and bring about a resolution to the conflict. He praised the Biden administration’s commitment to breaking the deadlock, but questioned Russia’s sincerity, stating that they are “not dancing the tango” towards peace as actively as Ukraine.

The U.S. has proposed a 30-day ceasefire, which Russia has yet to fully agree to, citing unresolved issues. Senator Rubio expressed skepticism, suggesting that Russia’s response will reveal whether they are genuinely seeking peace or employing delaying tactics.

Despite concerns over President Trump’s previous trade policies, Rutte affirmed that potential trade disputes would not impact the military alliance’s strength or European defense spending. He highlighted the significant increase in European defense budgets, comparing it to Cold War levels.

Addressing concerns from some European leaders about expanding a western European nuclear umbrella beyond the U.S. and U.K. guarantees, Rutte reiterated the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to NATO’s Article 5, which stipulates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. He urged European allies to heed consistent reassurances from senior U.S. leadership regarding NATO’s security.
