**Chennai, April 6, 2025** – Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko has strongly condemned the recently signed defence cooperation agreement between India and Sri Lanka. The MoU, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the island nation, includes a partnership between the two countries’ defence forces.
Vaiko criticized the agreement, stating that the Sri Lankan defence forces were responsible for the massacre of over 1.37 lakh Sri Lankan Tamils and the sexual assault of thousands of women during the Sri Lankan civil war. He argued that the pact is particularly egregious given the Tamil community’s ongoing efforts to bring the Sri Lankan Army before the International Court of Justice to investigate alleged genocide. The MDMK leader called the defence agreement “highly condemnable” in light of these historical atrocities.
