**Madurai, April 6, 2025** – M.A. Baby, a long-standing Politburo member, has been elected the new general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). The announcement was made following the conclusion of the party’s 24th congress in Madurai on Sunday. The congress also elected an 18-member Politburo, including eight new members. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan received an exemption from the party’s 75-year age limit for holding positions due to his current role.

Baby, born in Kollam, Kerala in 1954, has a rich history of political activism, beginning with his student years. He rose through the ranks of student and youth organizations, eventually leading both the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). He served as a Rajya Sabha member (1986-1998) and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing Kundara (2006-2016). His ministerial experience includes serving as Kerala’s General Education and Culture Minister (2006-2011). He was elected to the CPI(M) Politburo in 2012. Beyond politics, Baby is also a published author.

The election marks a significant shift in leadership for the CPI(M), and Baby’s extensive experience and background are expected to shape the party’s future direction.
