Sun Apr 06 13:35:26 UTC 2025: ## Jipmer Releases Updated Neonatal Nursing Manual to Combat High Newborn Mortality

**Puducherry, April 6, 2025** – The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) has launched an updated neonatal nursing manual aimed at reducing India’s high neonatal mortality rate. The manual was distributed to 65 nurses from across Tamil Nadu and Kerala during a two-day workshop.

India accounts for a significant portion of global newborn deaths – one-fifth of all live births and 27% of global newborn mortality. Approximately 3.5 million preterm and 7.5 million low-birth-weight babies are born in India annually, representing a vulnerable population.

The workshop, co-hosted by Jipmer’s Departments of Neonatology and Nursing, focused on equipping nurses with the latest knowledge and skills in neonatal care. The training included hands-on sessions on essential newborn care, handling NICU equipment, and common neonatal procedures. Topics covered ranged from identifying sick neonates and lactation support to proper oxygen delivery. A special session on communication skills was also conducted.

The manual addresses the three major causes of neonatal deaths: infections, prematurity, and birth asphyxia. Experts highlighted that effective interventions like clean delivery and breastfeeding can significantly reduce infection-related deaths. Eminent neonatologists from Chennai also participated in the training faculty. This initiative underscores Jipmer’s commitment to improving neonatal care and lowering the alarming rates of newborn mortality in India.
