**Suzuka, Japan** – Max Verstappen defied expectations to snatch pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, ending McLaren’s dominance at Suzuka. The reigning world champion delivered a stunning final lap in qualifying, beating McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri by less than half a tenth of a second. This marks Verstappen’s fourth consecutive pole at Suzuka.
McLaren had appeared poised for a pole sweep after their strong start to the 2025 season, with their drivers sharing victories and pole positions in the first two races. However, Verstappen’s blistering lap time of 1:26.983 overturned the predicted outcome, leaving the Red Bull team ecstatic. His engineer called the performance “insane,” while team principal Christian Horner declared it “unbelievable.”
The contrast within the Red Bull team was stark, as Verstappen’s new teammate Yuki Tsunoda qualified a disappointing 15th, one spot behind Liam Lawson.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured fourth place, while Lewis Hamilton endured a challenging qualifying session, finishing eighth and three tenths behind his teammate. George Russell, who had seemed a potential challenger for McLaren, ended up fifth after a final lap error. Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed with a sixth-place finish. Other notable performances included Isack Hadjar in seventh, and Oliver Bearman’s impressive Q3 run for Haas in tenth. Carlos Sainz will start from 15th after a three-place grid penalty.
Earlier concerns about trackside grass fires, which caused red flags during practice sessions, were largely mitigated during qualifying, with only one stoppage. The overnight rain forecast may further improve track conditions for the race.
Verstappen, currently eight points behind Norris in the championship standings, expressed his satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the pole position after a challenging period for Red Bull. He stated, “We tried the best we could to get the best possible balance…The last lap was just flat out and it is incredibly rewarding.”
The Japanese Grand Prix will air live on Sky Sports F1 and Main Event at 6:00 AM on Sunday.
