Sun Apr 06 12:01:25 UTC 2025: ## Indonesia to Negotiate, Not Retaliate, Against Trump’s New Tariffs

**JAKARTA, April 6, 2025** – Indonesia will not retaliate against the 32% tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Indonesian goods, opting instead for diplomatic negotiations, according to Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto. The tariffs, part of a broader sweep of global levies announced on April 2nd, are set to take effect on April 9th.

Hartarto stated that Indonesia prioritizes the long-term health of bilateral trade relations and maintaining economic stability. The government will hold meetings with businesses on April 7th to strategize a response and explore alternative trade partnerships with European nations to lessen reliance on the U.S. and China. A high-level delegation will also travel to the U.S. for direct negotiations.

The move comes despite Indonesia posting a significant $16.8 billion trade surplus with the U.S. in 2024, making the U.S. its third-largest export destination. Key exports affected include electronics, apparel, and footwear. The government plans to support impacted sectors.
