Sun Apr 06 04:50:00 UTC 2025: **Alpine Rookie Doohan Walks Away From High-Speed Crash at Japanese Grand Prix**

SUZUKA, Japan – Alpine Formula 1 reserve driver Jack Doohan escaped serious injury Friday after a high-speed crash during the second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix. Doohan spun approaching Turn 1, causing significant damage to his car, including the loss of both left-side wheels. While he walked away from the wreckage with the assistance of marshals, he underwent precautionary medical checks as per F1 regulations.

Doohan confirmed he was unharmed, attributing the incident to a misjudgement in failing to close his Drag Reduction System (DRS). Alpine Team Principal Oliver Oakes confirmed this assessment, stating that the incident was a learning experience. Despite the extensive damage to the car, Oakes expressed confidence that the team would have it repaired in time for the remainder of the weekend. Doohan himself echoed this sentiment, stating his focus was on Saturday’s qualifying session.

The crash comes amidst speculation regarding Doohan’s future with Alpine, with the team recently signing Franco Colapinto as a reserve driver. Reports suggest Doohan’s position could be under threat as early as the Miami Grand Prix next May. Fellow reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa took Doohan’s place in the first practice session and performed well, potentially putting him in line to replace Doohan should he be unable to continue the weekend. Oakes expressed satisfaction with both Hirakawa and Pierre Gasly’s performance during practice.
