Sun Apr 06 14:47:37 UTC 2025: ## Bangalore University Students Face Ongoing Commute Challenges Despite Promises
**Bengaluru, April 6, 2025** – Students at Bangalore University’s Jnanabharathi campus continue to face significant challenges commuting within the sprawling campus, despite repeated calls for improvements. The lack of designated bus stops, inadequate infrastructure, and inconsistent bus service are forcing students to wait in harsh weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods.
The issue highlights a lack of basic amenities, with students reporting the absence of bus shelters at the three unofficial bus stops located near the Civil Engineering Department, library, and administration block. Students describe waiting for buses in extreme heat and rain, with unreliable service, particularly near the library. Even students residing in university hostels find the distance to some departments too far to walk, necessitating reliance on the unreliable bus system.
The university’s administration acknowledges the problem. Vice-Chancellor Jayakara S.M. stated that new bus shelters, potentially incorporating technologically advanced features, are planned under corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. However, this follows years of unmet demands, including a 2022 demonstration triggered by a student’s death after an accident while boarding a bus. This incident prompted calls for a ban on private vehicles on campus and improved road safety measures.
Lokesh Ram, vice-president of the Bangalore University Postgraduate and Research Scholars’ Union, expressed frustration at the lack of progress, noting that basic amenities such as bus shelters, pedestrian crossings, and drinking water remain absent despite repeated requests. Students also report difficulties crossing roads safely, especially during peak hours.
While the Bengaluru Traffic Police have implemented some safety measures like banning heavy goods vehicles and installing speed breakers, a complete ban on private vehicles on campus remains unlikely.
The ongoing situation underscores the need for immediate action to improve campus infrastructure and transport for students, ensuring a safer and more comfortable learning environment.
