BELAGAVI, April 6, 2025 – Karnataka’s Sugar and Textiles Minister, Shivanand Patil, announced Saturday that sugar factories in the state still owe farmers approximately ₹700-800 crore in sugarcane dues. While approximately ₹18,000 crore (95% of the total bill) has already been paid to farmers, Patil assured that the remaining amount will be disbursed swiftly.
Patil emphasized the importance of sugarcane as a key agricultural product in India, highlighting the need for technological advancements to boost productivity. He cited the recent launch of M.Sc. courses in sugarcane and alcohol technology at the S. Nijalingappa Sugar Institute as a step towards modernizing the industry and training future professionals.
The Minister further revealed the state government’s plans to promote green energy through increased ethanol production, aligning with the central government’s initiative to blend more green energy into the fuel supply. He acknowledged the inherent volatility of sugarcane prices, similar to other agricultural commodities, and stressed the need for all stakeholders – farmers, factory workers, and management – to collaborate and adapt to market fluctuations and weather challenges.
Patil also advocated for closer cooperation between the sugar industry and cooperative institutions to enhance farmers’ economic independence and rural prosperity. He believes that technological adoption, environmental protection within the sugar industry, and increased farmer income are crucial for the state’s agricultural economy and the national economic development. His statements were made during the inauguration of a seminar at the S. Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, held in association with the South Indian Sugarcane and Sugar Technologists Association. Several key figures from the industry and government were in attendance.
