**New Delhi, [Date]** – The University Grants Commission (UGC) has implemented new regulations to streamline the recognition of foreign educational qualifications in India. The UGC (Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications Obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2025, aim to address the challenges faced by Indian students returning with international degrees who often experience delays in getting their credentials recognized for further education or employment.
The new regulations establish a standardized process for evaluating foreign qualifications based on factors such as the legitimacy of the awarding institution, the duration and level of the qualification, and its comparability to Indian programs. However, a key exception applies to professional degrees in fields like medicine, pharmacy, nursing, law, and architecture. These will continue to be governed by the respective statutory regulatory councils in India.
To be eligible for equivalence, the foreign institution must be legally recognized in its home country, the student must have met the institution’s admission requirements, and the program must be comparable to similar Indian programs. Crucially, qualifications from unrecognized institutions or unaccredited programs will not be considered.
This move is expected to benefit the growing number of Indian students returning from overseas studies, providing a clearer and more efficient pathway for recognition of their hard-earned qualifications.
