**Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea –** A tsunami warning has been issued for Papua New Guinea following a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation early Saturday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the shallow quake, which hit at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), was centered approximately 194 kilometers (120 miles) east of Kimbe on New Britain island.
The USGS warned of potential tsunami waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters along the Papua New Guinean coastline. A less severe warning, predicting waves of up to 0.3 meters, was issued for the nearby Solomon Islands. As of yet, there have been no reports of damage or casualties. The situation continues to be monitored.
