**Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea –** A tsunami warning has been issued for Papua New Guinea following a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation early Saturday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the shallow quake, which hit at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), was centered approximately 194 kilometers (120 miles) east of Kimbe on New Britain island.

The USGS warned of potential tsunami waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters along the Papua New Guinean coastline. A less severe warning, predicting waves of up to 0.3 meters, was issued for the nearby Solomon Islands. As of yet, there have been no reports of damage or casualties.
