**CHENNAI, April 5, 2025** – A renewed campaign against public spitting is underway in Chennai, spearheaded by the StopIndiaSpitting movement. The initiative, initially launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, is focusing its efforts on Mylapore, with volunteers placing “No Spitting” signs in prominent locations.
The campaign, a partnership between StopIndiaSpitting, Ecoconnectors, and Beautiful Bharat, involves community engagement. Volunteers have been speaking with residents, security guards, auto drivers, and shopkeepers about the health risks and unhygienic nature of public spitting, emphasizing its impact on the city’s cleanliness and Swachh Survekshan rankings.
Odette Katrak of Beautiful Bharat highlighted the resurgence of the campaign, citing the continued public health risks associated with spitting, particularly the transmission of diseases like tuberculosis. Ganga Sridhar of Ecoconnectors emphasized the plan to expand the signage across Mylapore and beyond.
Volunteers have already placed signs at various locations including a primary health centre, apartments, shops, and auto-rickshaws. Participants stressed the importance of visible deterrents, noting that the absence of signs and lack of public awareness contribute to the persistence of the problem. They called on citizens to politely intervene and encourage others to refrain from spitting in public.
Public spitting is one of four key indicators in the Swachh Survekshan cleanliness assessments, alongside litter, urination, and open defecation. The StopIndiaSpitting movement encourages residents to contact them to activate the campaign in their localities and request signs in various languages.
