**Bamako, Mali** – Amadou Bagayoko, the Grammy-nominated Malian musician and one half of the internationally acclaimed duo Amadou and Mariam, has passed away at the age of 70. The Malian Ministry of Culture announced his death on Saturday, noting his significant contributions to both Malian and international music scenes.
Bagayoko, who lost his sight at age 15, met his future wife and musical partner, Mariam Doumbia, at the Institute for the Young Blind in Mali. Together, they formed Amadou and Mariam, captivating audiences worldwide with their unique blend of traditional West African rhythms and Western rock and pop influences. Known as “the blind couple from Mali,” they achieved remarkable success, becoming one of Africa’s best-selling musical acts.
Their career spanned decades, marked by collaborations with renowned artists such as Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. The duo received numerous accolades, including a Victoire de la Musique award in France for their album *Dimanche a Bamako*, and a BBC Radio Award for World Music. Their album *Welcome to Mali* garnered a Grammy nomination. They performed at prestigious events, including the Nobel Peace Prize concert in 2009 and the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Initially using their music to raise awareness about issues facing the blind and disabled, Amadou and Mariam’s music transcended borders, earning them a global following and solidifying their legacy as musical pioneers.
